What Happens at a Pelvic Floor Therapy Visit?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be a little intimidating, especially if it's your first time arriving. You might be concerned about talking about intimate topics and wondering how comfortable you will be. Hopefully, this blog will help allay your fears and allow you to arrive comfortable and confident at your first pelvic floor therapy visit at Marrón Pelvic Health.

Before the visit

Before a new patient is established, they will be asked to fill out some basic health information. Pelvic floor intake forms tend to be more detailed than one may expect. the pelvic floor is related to so many different aspects of our body and lifestyle and this intake form reflects that. The physical therapist has as much information as needed prior to the visit so that when you arrive your time is not wasted.

When you arrive

You will be greeted by a friendly, smiling person when you arrive at your session. The treatment area is clean, and calm and is filled with natural light at Marrón Pelvic Health. You will be shown where the facilities are, will be offered a drink of water, and shown where you can place your belongings safely.

The assessment

Your therapist will first review the paperwork that you filled out prior to your arrival. She will ask any additional questions as needed and will make sure that she is clear information on what you've already provided. Then the physical assessment will begin.

During the physical assessment, she will screen your range of motion and strength of multiple body parts. These body parts include the upper body, back, legs, and feet. She will then assess your breathing mechanics. Next, she will screen your arms, trunk, and legs for your strength.

Your pelvic floor muscles will then be assessed. There are several ways your pelvic floor therapist can do this. She can assess the mobility of your tailbone, hip girdle, and pubic region, internally, externally, or both. The extent of the pelvic floor assessment is due to previous information she's already gathered in the assessment as well as the patient's chief complaint. Just like the rest of the assessment, the patient is only asked to do what she feels comfortable doing. This is nothing like a gynecological exam. No equipment is involved and you can even stay clothed if that’s your preference.

The wrap-up

At the end of your pelvic floor assessment, you will be provided with an overview of the findings from your assessment. Your plan will be explained to you and you may even be sent home with homework so that at your next visit you can give the therapist even more information to further personalize your plan.
